Learn to Write (Ages 5-7)

Creative Phonics is designed to activate the neurological connections your child needs to learn to read and write. There are many hands-on activities to build fine motor skills, phonological awareness and handwriting. 

• Read together every day to learn content, discuss complex ideas and to learn the grammar of the written word. 
• Model writing for your child. Write for them as they speak their sentences.  
• Use handwriting and copywork practice (in Creative Phonics). 
• Build word banks together to develop vocabulary lists and to model the spelling of useful words.  
• Model writing in their Lapbook, speaking aloud what you are thinking and doing. Eg “C-A-T-E-R-P-I-L-L-A-R - that looks right, that’s a long word isn’t it? Can you see C-A-T at the beginning? Look - C-A-T.” 
• Write sentences, talk aloud the handwriting, spelling, the grammar, the punctuation. Let them hear the processes that are going on inside your head when you write. 
• Write small amounts of high-quality writing. One fabulous sentence has more value than a page of poor waffle! 
• Build skills in a systematic way through Write in Colour, then use these skills over and over in many contexts to develop competence. 
• Learn the language of grammar with your child so that you have a language to talk about their writing together. 
• Integrate writing with every subject – show why it’s useful. 
• Publish their finished writing in their Lapbook. 
• Use other Write in Colour Level 1 Core Programs to use their emerging writing skills in context.
