What is Write in Colour?

Write in Colour is the Simply Homeschool grammar based writing program. This program was developed by Karen Willson to help her daughter, who has dyslexia, and the many homeschool children she was teaching in small group writing classes.

Write in Colour is integrated into many Core Programs from K-10. This is important because it provides an opportunity for students to learn writing in the context of all subjects.

Write in Colour allocates a colour and shape for each part of grammar:

Nubbly Green Naming Nouns

Bouncing Blue Verbs

Amazing Orange Adjectives

Fiery Red Adverbs

In Pink Ink Prepositional Phrases

Purple Clause Conjunctions

Write in Colour is available in Levels 1-3:

Level 1 - Introduces the parts of grammar using these colours. Sentence writing is then introduced based on this grammar using colour patterns. Level 1 also includes note-taking and building word banks.

Level 2 - Introduces Sentence Starters based on grammar. This is where students consider the beginning of each sentence, as starting a sentence well improves the whole sentence. Level 2 also teaches the Powerful Paragraph structure.

Level 3 - Consolidates previous levels and teaches Essay Writing, based on the skills students have already mastered. Students are taught skills for writing Introductions and Conclusions, transitioning between topics, and other useful essay writing skills.

All students need to begin with Level 1. High School students can use Aesop's Fables Introduction to Write in Colour over one term and then move on to Aesop's Fables 2.

High School Students who are competent in grammar already (including nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, prepositional phrases, conjunctions, passive/active use of verbs, and conjunctions) could complete Aesop's Fables Levels 1 & 2 concurrently with a Level 2 Write in Colour Core Program such as A Life Like Mine or The Word Spy.
