A Winter Homeschool Reset

Winter Homeschool Reset: A gentle invitation to slow down. Encouraging and inspiring homeschool advice from Simply Homeschool. Australian homeschool curriculum and unit studies provider

At the beginning of the year, the weather is warm, the sky is big and bright, and we are filled with optimism about what the year could be. Maybe we’re long-time homeschoolers, maybe we’re a couple of years in, or maybe we’re just starting out

The sunny days tempt us outside; we spend long stretches there. We start new programs, make new plans, and try new activities.

Then the days slip into winter.

Homeschooling means we have the freedom to choose how we spend our days. We don’t need to work on a ten-week schedule. We can pause and take time to look at our rhythms and make changes. We can play under the welcoming shade of a tall tree in summer, and breathe in the cool, crisp mornings of winter before being enticed back inside to cosy up with a book.

As homeschoolers, we don’t have to do the same thing all year. While summer wants us to stay a while longer, winter asks us to slow down. Oftentimes, our summer rhythm doesn’t work in winter. And that’s ok.

When we keep to the same routine year-round, we can miss out on the learning, personal growth, comfort, and rest that come from living in tune with nature’s rhythms.

As the days shorten, we can start to feel a shift in our rhythm. Mid-year feels like a good time to reset. What does winter look like where you live? How does it feel? What do you find yourself wanting to do? Take a moment to think about:

  • What's working well for our family at the moment?
  • Is there anything that worked well in summer but is now creating stress?
  • Is there anything we could change to better fit this season?

Slow Down, Read More, and Reflect

Winter is the season for Ugg boots, blankets, hot drinks and gathering together on the couch with a basket overflowing with books.

It’s the perfect time to reset from the busyness of long summer days and reflect:

  • What's bringing joy and connection to our days?
  • Which rhythms are helping our family thrive?
  • Is there anything we need to let go of?
  • Are there commitments we've outgrown?

Homeschooling gives us the freedom to make changes when something isn't working. We don't have to keep doing something that isn’t working for us.

Perhaps a program needs adjusting. Maybe an extracurricular activity has become more draining than beneficial. Perhaps this season needs you to take on less.

That's not failing. Or getting behind. It doesn’t do us any good to keep pushing through when the season, our minds, our bodies, and our families are asking us to pause and reset.

We say this a lot, because it’s just so important, you have TIME. You can rest and reset.

Winter reminds us that rest is essential. By slowing down and reflecting, we can find peace.

Resetting Expectations

Even the veteran homeschoolers among us know that the pull of new year plans can be intoxicating. And then, by the time winter rolls around, well, some of the excitement has definitely worn off.

But that’s real life.

You are not failing because your days look different from how they did (or how you imagined they would) at the start of the year.

We can find peace in resetting our expectations to something more realistic. Oftentimes, our expectations come from a place of love, but also from a place of fear. If we can name the fear behind the expectation, we can reframe it into something more realistic.

What are the fears that are driving the expectations we place on ourselves?

  • I am afraid that my family will judge me if I don’t have it all together all the time.
  • I am afraid that I am disadvantaging my children if they don’t have certain experiences.
  • I am afraid that my child will not grow to be a functioning adult if I pull back on academics.
  • I am afraid that my child will fall further and further behind if we can’t get past this obstacle.
  • I am afraid that my homeschool registration won’t be renewed if I don’t fulfil all the outcomes.

Some of these fears fall away with time, and others we can reset with some gentle grace towards ourselves and our children.

If you’re feeling the pressure of impossible expectations, pause, try to name the fear, centre yourself, and reset. Bundle everyone up, take a walk in the winter air, then come home for hot chocolate.

Simplify Your Homeschool Rhythm

The shorter days of winter invite us to slow down and simplify. Summer is all fun and sun. But Winter? Well, winter wants us to snuggle in and spend long stretches of time on quieter joys.

  • Read aloud to your children even if they can already read independently. Read to your teenagers. Sitting and listening can be wonderfully relaxing for kids and teens.
  • Work on a shared family project. Try a new cosy skill that fits with the season, like knitting, baking bread, or chopping wood and building a fire.
  • Make space in your weekly schedule for slow mornings and long breakfasts on the couch.
  • Reset your physical space. Now might not be the time for a complete overhaul, but it might be time to take down some artwork and put away some projects.

A simplified homeschool rhythm isn’t wasted time. There’s value in slowing down. You’re creating space for rest and resetting. These are healthy habits that our children will carry into their adult lives.

Winter doesn't have to be something we simply endure until warmer weather arrives. It can be a season of rest, reflection and gentle renewal. A season to slow down, simplify and reconnect with what matters most.

Embrace the slower pace, gather your children close, and allow winter to be the gentle reset your family needs.
